I've an old dell laptop that is barely adequate for
Linux, and the pcmcia usb card doesn't seem to play in
Debian etch.
I was wondering if I would gain by just installing
freedos. Then the question is, does Freedos on a
laptop have drivers for the pcmcia, and usb?

So there is no fixed USB in that laptop, and the BIOS
probably does not support any USB. Modern BIOSes do
support USB keyboard, mouse and storage (flash, cdrom,
flopp
I'm almost getting it to work with Debian Etch. I can
insert a pcmcia usb card and read/write to usb memory
sticks. Haven't worked up to the webcam yet.

Hi Larry,
gspca driver can help you, take a look:
http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html
and on debian you can try to pick up a precompiled binary
by doing:
apt-cache search gspca
apt will list all packages with gspca in the string
and then:
apt-get install (probabily gspca...)
