and it fails with the following (partial) error message:

which I assume means it

You could try first installing rocky8, then install freesurfer, then
*upgrade* the machine to rocky9, though you still may not have python2 after
the upgrade. We have not run into any issues so far running the
freesurfer rocky8 binaries on rocky9.
