With the 7.4.1 release, you can install R2014b or R2019b matlab runtime
environment into the freesurfer tree. Earlier freesurfer releases use
R2014b. I would setup the freesurfer environment first, and then pass in

I dowloaded MCR zip file for linux in /home/vboxuser/Downloads from MatLab
website.
I extracted files in new foldern named Matlab_Component_Runtime_R2014b in
Downloads.
I am trying to install Matlab Component Runtime,
Matlab is not needed for basic FS analysis. I think the only things it
is used for in FS is hippocampal subfields, FSFAST, and lGI. I don't
think there are any limitations, but I'm not sure. I don't know about spm12

I was pleased to learn freesurfer runs with the standalone matlab runtime, and
installed this on CentOS7. It seems to be working well. I noticed that there's
also a version of spm12 that runs using this runtime, "with limitations." Two
questions:
1. Are there freesurfer limitations
