You'll have to load it as an overlay to a surface, eg,
freeview -f
$FREESURFER_HOME/subjects/fsaverage/surf/lh.inflated:overlay=fmcpr.up.sm5.fsaverage.lh.nii.gz
there won't be much to see :)
