Is there some way to set mplayer-options per-directory rather
than per-file or -filetype? I've got a bunch of files that
really need "-af volume=+10", but of course that buggers up
things that don't need it so it's not a great thing to be
sticking in MPLAYER_ARGS.

it first shows the folder /data/movie. so is it possible that freevo

which i miss is the ability to use all of the widescreen support from my xbox;

I found my problem. I had used the example for MAME from freevo_conf.py.
The example has a -fullscreen option. I've learned this is not a valid option
for xmame. I instead needed to use -x11 3 for fullscreen.
I am up and running. Thought I'd post my answer for others.
