what did you set as TV_RECORD_DIR in your local_conf.py?
Should be the place, where you want to save your recordings,
something like:
TV_RECORD_DIR = '/home/freevo/tv'
replace the above with your chosen directory.

They do not work with standard freevo arguments to mplayer.
In winamp they are played all right and identified as
MPEG 1.0 layer 3
