I use 320kb for mp3 and really don't think that there would be such different in 44.1
or 48kHz. Because of the mp3 compresion.. Try to make some mp3 in 192 and 320 and let
somebody else to play tham for you so you don't what format is playing and try to gess

Try to put to freevo_config.py this in the mplayer options:
MPLAYER_AO_DEV ='alsa -ac hwac3,mad,mp3,pcm -aop list=resample:fout=44100
the aop option should be what you are looking for
It works for me. I had some movie at 48kHz and couldn`t get the sound so I use this
and it resample it to 4
