Thanks to Gustavo you can already use this in freevo:
http://freevo.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/moin.cgi/DocumentationPage_2fPlugi
nInfo#head-70704c6c487cae4233a506c5291303932af483c8
works with lcdproc-0.4.x supported displays. Can be even patched to work

with current CVS-version (0.5) of LCDproc, I had to do this for my
display.
Note that your display size must be among those supported by the lcd.py 
freevo plugin (look at it in the plugins directory).
