Subject: NetLogo 5.0.3 released
To: netlogo-annou...@listserv.it.northwestern.edu

The Center for Connected Learning and Computer-Based Modeling at
Northwestern University is pleased to announce the release of
NetLogo 5.0.3, available for free download from our site at
http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/ .

The NetLogo user community has recently experienced much growth.
Maintaining the large code-base and adding features to support our users
requires considerable resources. Please consider making a donation at our
site
when you download.

NetLogo 5.0.3 includes a fix to NetLogo applets to make them compatible
with Java 7 on Mac OS X 10.7 and 10.8. A recent Software Update from
Apple makes Java 7 the default Java version for applets, so many more
users may now encounter the incompatibility in previous NetLogo versions.

Attention applet authors:
For you applets to work for all Mac users, you will need to replace the
NetLogoLite.jar on your web servers with the new JAR included with 5.0.3.

For Macintosh users with the Mountain Lion OS installed:
NetLogo 5.0.3 does not contain a fix for the Mountain Lion compatibility
issue described at
http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/mountain-lion.shtml . A future 5.0.4
release will include a fix. In the meantime, you can still run any NetLogo
version on Mountain Lion by following the instructions at that URL.

Please try 5.0.3 out and send us bug reports at
b...@ccl.northwestern.edu and other suggestions and comments at
feedb...@ccl.northwestern.edu. We really value your feedback and look
forward to hearing from you. Please let us know about bugs you find,
features you want, etc.

Most models created in earlier versions of NetLogo will work in
NetLogo 5.0.3, perhaps with minor updates to the code. If you have any
trouble, please consult:
http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/transition.html .

The following is a list of changes made since NetLogo 5.0.2:

* fixed bug: applet didn't work on Java 7 on Lion and Mountain Lion
* fixed bug: 5.0.2 regression: failure involving `foreach` plus `ask` plus
recursion
* fixed bug: problem with disabled buttons when importing world
* fixed bug: `mouse-inside?` sometimes gave spurious false reading
* fixed bug: can't load widgets containing long strings
* fixed bug: locale errors when opening headless model with controlling API
* enhancement: controlling API: ExtensionManager now allows access to
loaded extensions
* API documentation unbundled, for smaller download
* models: Oil Cartel: fix so plots in clients work
* models: Unverified models reviewed and updated to Sample Models: Flocking
Vee Formations, GasLab Circular Particles, Language Change, Perceptron
* models: new BEAGLE Evolution models: DNA Protein Synthesis
* models: new Connected Chemistry model: Reversible Reaction

We have four mailing lists for NetLogo:
- netlogo-announce: occasional release announcements only
- netlogo-users: discussions about using NetLogo
- netlogo-educators: discussions about teaching with NetLogo
- netlogo-devel: discussions about the development of NetLogo
http://ccl.northwestern.edu/netlogo/ has info on all four.

NetLogo was designed and authored by Uri Wilensky, project leader and
director of the CCL. The lead developer is Seth Tisue and the core
development
team includes Jason Bertsche and Nicolas Payette. Many others have
contributed
greatly. HubNet was jointly designed by Uri Wilensky and Walter Stroup.

The CCL gratefully acknowledges almost two decades of support for our
NetLogo work. Much of that support came from the National Science
Foundation -- grant numbers REC-9814682 and REC-0126227, with further
support from REC-0003285, REC-0115699, DRL-0196044, CCF-ITR-0326542,
