As to how they're doing it, just a few html tables holding a single .gif for each region. But mouseovers show the number of an individual person in a tooltip. An image map for that would be huge, so I assume they're calculating it somehow in Javascript from x/y position Didn't look further. On

When/if we get ubiquitous volumetric displays, the webpage could be a 1000-person-wide cube; if the voxels-per-inch-cube-edge resolution was the same as the current pixels-per-inch resolution
