One of the problems I have with this:

I remember sitting in on a talk by this guy:

that a (hypothetical, of course) system of systems universe might
actually loop... i.e. yes, it's turtles all the way down, but you could
(in principle) mark any given turtle and find your way back to a marked
turtle with an ongoing monotonic scale change.
