If the iMac is a 400 DV SE then the problem is common in conjunction with a specific firmware update, and generally attrituted to corruption of the to the Power Manager Unit, which can be reset/replaced, but the problem may persist (as it does on my iMac) .
Do the date and time get mixed up? Whichever iMac model this is, try Zapping the PRAM nonetheless (Restart in Classic holding down Command+Option+P+R).
