A little off-topic, but since the iPod is close to a Mac, maybe someone will
have a suggestion.

I think that I busted my iPod. I just switched to a new system and
synchronized my iPod from iTunes without realizing that I haven't signed on
for the iTunes music store. Well, no song would play anymore.

So, I went back to iTunes, signed in the music store and then plugged my
iPod. I almost immediately got the system folder flashing picture on the
iPod and then a message on my Mac saying that the disk I just connected was
not initialized! So, I initially used the iPod updater to restore it to
factory default. After a few seconds, the restore is aborted because "The
iPod disk does not have the correct structure.", whatever that means.

I then launched Disk Utility but then, my iPod is reported as an external
FireWire disk of 82.6GB in size! It's only 20GB! I've tried nonetheless to
erase it but after a few second, Disk Utility reports that "Disk Erase
failed with the error: Input/output error".

What can I do short of stopping by the Apple store again?

-Laurent.

brain dump n.: [common] The act of telling someone everything one knows
about a particular topic or project. Typically used when someone is going to
let a new party maintain a piece of code. Conceptually analogous to an
operating system core dump in that it saves a lot of useful state before an
exit. "You'll have to give me a brain dump on FOOBAR before you start your
new job at HackerCorp." See core dump (sense 4). At Sun, this is also known
as `TOI' (transfer of information).
