I'd try and get a Lucent-based card. They seem to have better range than, say, the Linksys variety. I have both the Linksys WPC11 and the Lucent Silver, both work fine in OSX. There are plenty of places to get a Lucent cheap. They have changed names a bunch of times over the years, so Agere, Avay
