Apple Care is an especially good deal for powerbook users as it also covers
your original battery, which will almost certainly need replacing within 3
years. The battery needn't die, either, it's enough that it isn't "working
properly", which is a bit subjective, but which is the standard Apple uses
for anything else, such as the CD/DVD, etc.
In practical terms, I got my Lombard battery replaced right at the end of
the 3-year Applecare period. It was holding about a 30 minute charge and
when I called, the Apple people didn't even question the claim; they
immediately opened a case number and starting processing shipment of the new
battery. Great stuff.
Considering that a new battery is usually about half the price of Applecare,
it's not a bad deal.
