I think I may have figured out the solution. When the bluetooth mouse is not working, I simply click one of the mouse buttons, and in a few seconds, the mouse comes back to life!
My G4 iBook has the internal Bluetooth. I had first ordered the iBook without Bluetooth, but decided to get the internal Bluetooth, so I don't have to connect the external Bluetooth device. I still like my external mouse better. It feels better, and is more comfortable to use than the Bluetooth mouse.
