Here is a brief follow-up (brief because things went well) to my message from a couple months ago. I did end up buying the camcorder and shot some pretty cool video of some late-season snow-capped mountains on a trip to Vermont. It looked like something out of The Lord of the Rings movie, but with more trees on the mountains :-)
Just the other day, I finally got the chance to hook up the camera, by firewire, and everything worked just fine. I hooked it up, launched iMovie and it was there. It just worked, like every device I've used with OS X so far! I'm a newbie in digital video, but I'm satisfied with the quality of the video.
My set-up is an iBook 700mhz with combo drive and OS X v10.2.6.
Thanks to all who gave me advice on the purchase.

Hello,
I've been thinking about getting involved in digital video for a while, you know record all those priceless cat-related moments and trips to Vermont and stuff. I saw this camcorder on dealmac the other day and have seen some good things said about it. I'm looking for something entry level, but don't want to spend a lot until I understand more. I was wondering if anyone in the group had experience with it. How is the quality of digital8, both for watching on tv, as well as editing and watching on the computer? Also, any beginner resources online would be appreciated. I've read a couple of faqs I found on google.
I have an iBook 700 that I bought back in October.
