What I'm waiting for is wearables to happen with floating 20" images in
glasses.

We've all been there with the Virtual Reality Craze of last decade... I still remember 16-page booklets containing just disclaimers of how these kind of glasses can damage your eyes/make you vomit/turn you into a serial killer, etc. Based on (commercial) state of the art I've seen last year, I'm not sure if the technology is gonna be ready any time soon.

I suppose key chords is the only way to go to make that work.

Not sure what you mean here, but it's very interesting for me (I'm an interaction designer). I presume you could still use voice commands (as ready for prime time as those goggles, I guess), mice/trackballs/trackpads shouldn't be a problem, and even keyboards for those gifted with touch typists skills?

Maybe wearables never will compete with portables, just open up new
avenues of usage. They really should be around the corner technically,
but there most likely will be yet some time for any siginificant market
demand.

Not sure about the "around the corner" bit, although who knows what they're cooking in the research labs at this moment. But the whole idea of Augmented Realities is indeed too good not to be expected with held breath.
