Got it. Checked mod date/time on user prefs after 'healing' that user via a barebones login. Only a handful had been modded at the appropriate time. Dock prefs were the problem. Dockdisk haxie responsible. Uninstalled, all well now.

Thanks to listies I have learned useful stuff, plus my problem is fixed

You can search for corrupted prefs with this in the terminal (On one line
only):

find ~/Library/Preferences /Library/Preferences -type f -name "*.plist" |
sed -e "s/\(.*\)/\"\1\"/" | xargs plutil -lint

Anyone know how to make terminal code like this to an app to execute?
