The Pismo and Lombard upgrades are different, and not
interchangeable. The Lombard upgrade is a card you buy from
PowerLogix and use it to replace the processor card in your Lombard.
As such, it is an option worth considering if your Lombard has
sufferend the increasingly-common Cache or CPU Death. Or if you have
a good CPU card, there does seem to be a market on eBay as folks
whose CPU/cache has died are looking for replacements. A local friend
has this upgrade, says he's happy with it. He uses a small (USB?) fan
to keep it cool on hot Southwestern summer days -- though I doubt it
runs much, or any, hotter than the stock G3. My Lombard's fan was
coming on a lot before its CPU finally died.

The Pismo upgrade requires sending your PowerBook to PowerLogix, who
then remove the CPU from its daughtercard and replace it with a G4.
True, it's not much of an improvement except for Altivec-optimized
applications (including, I understand, some elements of the Finder in
X, as well as iTunes, Photoshop for X, etc.). It is more worth doing
if your Pismo is the 400MHz version, as the upgrade results in a
500MHz G4 no matter where you start. I queried PowerLogix about the
heat issue, was told the G4 they use runs cooler than the G3 now in
the Pismo. See XLR8's ongoing user forum:
http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/cpureview.lasso
(Select "PowerBook G3 2000 Rage128 Mobility" from the popup menu.)
Results seem to be mixed, but mostly positive.

I'm considering the upgrade when I get rich enough to buy a second
(400) Pismo to have upgraded, so my workflow won't be interrupted. I
don't care for the TiBook, would like to keep my Pismo "up-to-date"
as long as possible. Maybe by then there might be a faster G4
available, though there's been no hint of such a prospect so far.
