those drives die regularly.. We've got rebuilt units, for about $110 or so
(don't recall) There's not any extended coverage (even though it's a
common issue)..

While helping a friend install some software on her 1st-generation
400MHz G4 PowerBook, I ran into a problem: the CD drive made a
terrible noise while accessing the installer CD, then about halfway
through the installation the CD spun down to a stop, and after that
the drive kept making noises
