Dear Gang, here's part B of my long post wishing for help in upgrading decisions:
Please excuse the extreme length and breadth of my post-- think of it as an "open" self-examination.... I'm putting my pros and cons list for public airing in a dual hope that I'll recognize the right way to go here based on seeing it in print, but save that, I'm hoping that casual (or careful) unbiased observers will be kind enough to observe my data and suggest sound advice and decisions that I may not be able to see, based on my close proximity to the situation. really the only decisions I'm not certain to make are: (a)whether to upgrade the hard drive to 5400 or 7200 rpm. I may go for a slower hard drive with at least 30 gb of storage space. (b) The other is whether to go to the G4 upgrade. That would be the hardest decision to make, especially due to the high cost of the upgrade. The battery is expensive too, but I see that as unavoidable. Nevertheless, since I was able to acquire the assemblage I have now (Wallstreet 266, zip drive, superdiskdrive, already had the power adapter, existing library of software and peripherals, etc.) at what I consider a reasonably good deal, I don't see further upgrading as superfluous. One more wildcard to throw into the mix: acquiring extra funds from the sale of my existing laptop, which, I should sell. I already have a pb 1400 G3 250mhz 10gb HD as a very capable backup computer. The computer I have, that this wallstreet will replace, is no slouch, and really must be put up for sale, which would abate a considerable amount of the costs I'm considering. AND, BY THE WAY, IS OPEN TO OFFERS BEGINNING RIGHT AWAY, BEFORE THE DREADED "EBAY POSTING" THAT MAY INEVITABLY FOLLOW: FOR SALE:(This letter was not started or intended to osmose into a classified ad, but here goes, since it is germane to my ultimate decision making): ONE POWERBOOK 1400, WITH SONNET 400 MHZ G3 UPGRADE. 64 MB RAM. VIDEO OUT CARD, CABLE,ETC. ACTIVE MATRIX SCREEN. 30 GB HARD DRIVE. (4200 RPM, I THINK) ETHERNET CARDBUS. WITH DONGLE. 56K GLOBAL VILLAGE MODEM AND ETHERNET, WITH DUAL DONGLE. EVERY CONCEIVABLE SOFTWARE PROGRAM KNOWN TO MAC PEOPLE: (OF COURSE, THESE MUST BE DELETED, THEY WOULD BE LEFT ON THE HARD DRIVE POST SALE FOR "TESTING PURPOSES" ONLY)* A partial list of these programs: appleworks 6, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe In Design 1.5, Adobe Photoshop 7, Image Ready, Lots of plug ins, like Fractal design, knockout pro, eye candy, some others I can't think of at the moment, Microsoft Office X, Microsoft Office 2001, Grammarian X, Grammarian 2 [for sys 9], Maclink plus 13.0 [latest, full-featured version], Dreamweaver Studio MX [for sys X and 9], Dreamweaver Studio 4 [which includes fireworks 4, flash 4, etc., for sys 9], BB Edit, FileMaker Pro, both versions, for sys X and sys 9, Norton System Works, Stuffit Deluxe, for sys X and sys 9, Palm Desktop 4, plus all the software for a palm device that one could possibly want-- I won't list them individually, but my palm is definitely "fully loaded." Lots of games, but most of them not the high dollar "shoot-em-ups" -- not my style; The Utility programs like Retrospect, Popchar Pro (excellent font utility), Norton System works, (I think I mentioned that....) Quicktime 6 with pro key enabled, Roxio Titanium Toast [CD, MP3,video recording app], Ray Gun (for eliminating hisses and pops, etc., from vinyl to CD recording), Quicken 2003 Deluxe, Merriam Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, an interactive full featured program, very useful. Spelltools, similar to MW-- I don't use it much now that I have MW installed. OK, I'm sure I've worn out even the most interested of souls. If you would like to make suggestions that would be of interest to the powerbook group as a whole, please post your reply to the group. If you would like to discuss the sale of my pb 1400, please send me a private post. Thanks to all, thanks for your indulgence and patience.
