The chip was bad. I replaced with an another 512 MB, so that now the hardware configuration is:

256 MB upper slot high profile, correctly seen as 256;

512 MB bottom slot, seen, of course, as 256.

For a total of 512 MB without searching for the expensive and hard to find 256 128 x 16 Mb card.

Yes, but the same system (WS with blue chip 500 MHz) with 384 MB RAM is absolutely flawless.

12 GIG IBM 4 years old. I have a spare 40 GIG I will give a try.

This might be a good way to find out whether the memory or the hard drive is bad...
