Following up on an earlier post about experiences with 10.3.2 on Pismo.. I noted then that for some reason Safari had slowed down dramatically since 10.2.x.

I've found out why: I had a very large number of entries in my /machines directory in the NetInfo Manager, with heaps of ad server sites all pointing to 127.0.0.1 (localhost) so they didn't load. That was done over a year ago as a way to defeat unnecessary downloads of ads inside web pages as suggested in one of those excellent O'Reilly MacDevCenter articles.

Anyway .. under Jaguar, Safari worked very swiftly on my modest hardware (Pismo/400MHz, 1Gb RAM) but it ground to a near halt under Panther.

Now having cleared the machines directory it works very fast again.

cheers,

Gavin Tiplady

there: "Joseph," he said, "the sheep have blasted theirselves -" '
