Ok, this is what I did and it worked without apparent problem: I booted off the OS 9 Classic CD, reformatted the almost 8GB drive and installed OS 9, then I rebooted off the OS X.2 CD and installed. No screen dim problems or anything. However, I never actually booted into OS 9 before installing OS
