One other practical tip, after you repartition, install OS 9 first,
then OS X. The OS 9 installer won't install over OS X, so if you
install OS X first, that also sends you back to Square One. But, having
two partitions is your problem, the exact same thing happened to me!

What version of OS 9 are you running? What version of the OS 9 startup
disk CP do you have? Is your PRAM battery working fully? You've run
Disk First Aid from the 10.2.1 install disk and repaired the
permissions?

Yeah, I had all kinds of problems with that setup too. Turns out Apple
says specifically that you should install OS X and OS 9 in the _same_
partition. When I repartitioned and installed them both in the same
partition, problems vanished. Setup is now OS X 10.2 & OS 9.2 on a
beige G3 (orig 300

If you boot from the install CD for Jaguar, you can run the disk
utility from the CD. After the bo
Before taking drastic action, after booting from the install CD, try
running the Disk Utility | First Aid and repairing the drive. Repeat
until there are no errors reported. Next, repair disk permissions. Then
try booting from the hard drive, again.

you probably need to run a drive repair utility, it's not so much that a particular
file is damaged as it is that the directory structure on the drive is damaged. you
might try just deleting the finder preferences, but you've probably got a more serious

I guess it could also be a dead pram battery. They always cause
strangeness.
