I don't think you can -- it will always try to mount the volume and fail.
cant u do this with drive

i just fried my G4 867mhz quicksilver by trying this with a 9600XT graphics
card (mac G5 OEM card)
the power supply is completely fried and will not power up.
its not worth it. just keep using the thing
