clamshell ibooks, for reasons that aren't at all clear to me, have
collectible value. Especially depending on the processor and optical drive
(last model supports 10.4.11 natively). There was even somebody installing
1024x768 display kits for them a few years ago. Basically, I see no
practical use
I haven't done it but would probably try Debian Jessie

A someone often suggests when this comes up every few weeks, mobile sites
are another option. Point your browser to m.facebook.com and I suspect it
will work fine for you (but without all the bells and whistles).

ebay frequently features drives loaded with OSX. Usually at a bargain
compared to buying the OS. I "think" this is legal.

$50 USB 2.0- (firewire drives are more)
Supports 10.4

It would likely be more expensive to get an external 5.25" firewire
enclosure and a drive known compatible with OSX unless you could go used on
the bay for cheap.

It sounds like you are drawing the same conclusion I am at this point. If
it worked that would be one thing, but it doesn't. You paid for a working
computer. Not another project, however fun. Send it back.

They sure do!
