I installed a little application called "Ciao" <http://cxc.harvard.edu/chandra-users/0472.html> on the "family" computer in the living room. It uses the sleep timer to not log out, but to go to the login window. This way, if my wife leaves the banking application running, and the kids unshackled, they can't arrange a trip to the North Pole on their own. Conversely, if my wife wants to continue working, she needn't log in and start all the applications up again. Works good.
