Topic: DL DVD burning Hi You can replace your current optical drive with the latest version (Pioneer DVR 117) for not a lot of money, which gives you dual layer capability and a faster burn speed as well. Here's how to proceed. 1 Turn off the G5 2 Lift up the lever on the back panel to release the aluminium side panel. 3 Take out the clear panel 4 Unplug the ribbon cable beneath and behind the drive, by pulling it directly towards yourself - its the big wide one at the top of the motherboard located just under the right hand end of the optical drive. 5 Undo the two grey levers on the side of the drive case by also pulling them towards you 6 Wriggle the drive case and it should pop out, feed the wide ide cable that you undid in 4 Up through the hole in the case, unplug the molex power plug at the end of the drive 7Take out the 4 black screws on the bottom of the old drive case and fit them to the new drive, fit the metal trim from the old drive face to the new one. use a 2.5mm allen key 8 Now here's the trick, tighten the front pair of screws nearest the front (disc end) all the way home, but, after doing the same with the back ones back them off two turns this allows the tray to miss the top of the G5 cabinet and eject and retract correctly 9 The amount of lift you give the drive at the rear may differ with differing cabinets/drive models but this is what I have found works in mine(using DVR-117drive) 10 Take the IDE ribbon off the old drive, fit it to the new one by plugging it into the back then press the sticky pad into the top of the drive case, fit the 4 pin molex, drop the IDE cable down the hole, fit the drive into the grey clamps and push them shut (carefully) 11 Plug in the IDE cable to the plug on the motherboard carefully - use a torch to make sure you align it correctly 12 replace the clear panel and fire it up, when running, test the eject operation, you may need to fiddle the back screws height wise to get a clean operation, If you do-start at 1 again, don't try and take shortcuts by doing it "hot" There you go, I hope that helps, its a lot of words but the actions are quite simple.
I started getting flaky burns in my 1.4 x2 G4 mdd fw800, so I replaced both drives and its behaved faultlessly ever since. Today I have just done the same to my "new" G5 and I must say I am impresssed with the engineering and build quality altogether.
