The Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions options are not
available from either the OS Disk Utilities or the OS 10.5 Install DVD
Disk Utilities.
Regardless of the version of Disk Utilities used, the icons show the
padlock, ownership cannot be changed, and the Permissions blocks are

I empathize with you!
The same thing happened to my QS 2002. The main drive is still OK, but
the IDE/ATA drive and two external USB drives all have the padlock and
give the "insifficient prvileges" error message.
These drives are not accessible when the machine is booted from the
10.5 inst

Installed latest security update today from Apple. All three of my boot
able hard drives will not open. I get the gray screen with spinning icon
for hours, so I did an erase and install on one of them and it now
mounts. The icons for the other 2 drives show small locks on the lower
left side. E
