I think your answer is in the Finder View menu. Choose Show View Options
check the box for Show Icon Preview.

I've only now noticed that a few messages have icons in the Flags

Did they ever appear before? I never noticed them, if they did.
For example, right now I see a !! , i.e. double exclamation mark
and a -- : dash

permissions.
I noticed that I can move windows around but I can't move items in the
windows. Later today I'll try some of the other suggestions.

You might try the free OnyX for Leopard.
Don't know which options to use, but it can help with issues like
this. Maybe something that Rebuilds things.
Maybe you'll locate an expert in the meantime ...
