accessibility nightmare, and I cannot get the JAWS cursor to land on

A very easy way to have an edit box in VB6 is by using the InputBox. You just
need a line of code such as
a$ = InputBox(Enter your name, )
Of course the Enter your name is just the prompt and can be changed to
anything that you want.
You might also want to take a look at the
