that I am seeing in my apache error log file every time the ganglia
page is loaded:

Sounds like you are on the right track. I agree that using the "normal"
avenues is a good decision and will work on the most platforms and with
the most hardware.
Keep it up, and let us know when you have something that warrents a
code review.
