should the data_source name specified in gmetad.conf override the root
name provided by the remote data_source?
would that be helpful or harmful or notimportantful?

that you like.
the default archives are (from the code)...

The touching less part is righteous, and I usually dont say that ;) But that
feature is the big win in my opinion. As for size, I come from a setup where
I would want to drop the 1sec resolution to get smaller RRDS, because I have
so many of them. 15sec resolution would be fine.
