there are perl bindings for libganglia (at least the metric generation) in : http://search.cpan.org/~hirose/Ganglia-Gmetric-XS-1.00/lib/Ganglia/Gmetric/XS.pm beware though that you won't be able to use with ganglia 3.1.x and will essentially link a static version of ganglia's metric implement into your code but at least will avoid having to generate binary packets and reverse engineer the protocol as it changes.
