Gay prince now pride of Sao Paulo parade

12 Jun 2009, 0342 hrs IST, Yogesh Pareek, TNN

BHARUCH: One of the world’s biggest parties — Sao Paulo gay pride parade —
will have a strong Gujarati flavour this time.

Prince of erstwhile Rajpipla state Manavendra Singh Gohil, who has become
the global face of the Indian gay movement, will be the chief guest at the
Sao Paulo gay pride parade in Brazil on June 14. Manavendra will also
inaugurate related events.

The gay prince has become a regular feature in international gay events and
has even been invited to the Oprah Winfrey Show. He has starred in the BBC
reality TV show last year. In July last year, he was invited to deliver the
inaugural speech at EuroPride festival at Stockholm in Sweden, which had
seen over 50,000 participants.

The Sao Paulo parade had just 2,000 marchers when it was first started in
1997, but has grown to become the largest gathering of gays and lesbians in
the world. This time organisers are expecting 40 lakh people to flood the
streets of the Brazilian city, singing and dancing around extravagant floats
with loud music.

Manavendra will be one of the main speakers along with ministers and other
officials of various governments around the world. Speaking to TOI on
Thursday before leaving for Sao Paulo, Manavendra said, “I would use my
presence at the largest gay pride parade to advocate safe sex and create
awareness about HIV and AIDS. I am also keen to know what programmes are
being followed in Brazil to fight diseases like AIDS.”

The gay prince, who champions the rights of homosexuals, will also
participate in a group discussion on making homosexuality legal in India. “I
will study the norms that helped in making homosexuality legal in Brazil. I
will try to incorporate them in our efforts to make homosexuality legal in
India,” Manavendra added.
