The GayBombay Special Meet: Dialogue with a Gay-friendly Physiatrist

Date: Wednesday, January 26, 2005
Time: 5:00PM - 6:00PM IST (GMT+05:30)

Coming to terms with our sexuality has its own pain and joy.  It's quite comforting to find so many guys like us, yet there is constant fear of  being exposed, marriage pressure, old age, loneliness and bleak future. No wonder, most of us have bouts of depression, withdrawal symptoms etc.

We may be completely comfortable with our sexuality, but we are left with so  many unanswered questions: Why am I Gay? Why only me? Are my parents responsible? What about my future? Do I need to come out to my parents?  If yes, how do I come out?

There is a strong desire to discuss these issues.  May be with a family doctor or a shrink. But we are too scared to approach the family doctor for obvious reasons. And most of us cannot find the right physiatrist. Moreover, the fear of meeting a quack and receiving aversion therapy puts brakes to our search for an unbiased physiatrist

However, I have been very fortunate on this front. When I came out to my mom, she took me to a wonderful shrink. Here is an excerpt from my coming out story.

The first thing the shrink asked me was why I came out to my mom. And I replied I wanted to get married to a guy (God only knows where the guy is going to come from) and I wanted my mom to be present. The shrink turned out to be really professional (thank god). He explained that there are guys and girls like me who are attracted to the same sex and not to the opposite sex. It's completely natural and nobody's fault. Further, he added that when he was pursuing medicine he came across many peers like me. He explained I wouldn't be able to sexually perform with the opposite sex and if got married would end up in a divorce. He explained that we don't have any right to spoil a girl's life. IF married I would be unhappy and therefore everybody else. So the best thing is to leave me alone. If she forced me than I would end up torturing myself. So she was to please leave Umang alone.

Further he explained to her that at least I came out to her and that proved I was a responsible son. Besides my sexual preference, everything else was fine - I didn't have any vices. There were cases where a girl felt she was trapped in a man's body and vice-versa. They wanted to have a sex change and were physically assaulting themselves. Fortunately I didn't feel that way. He actually said the words: ACCEPT HIM.

MY mom only had three questions after his explanation:
Q1) How can we change him?
Doc: Only god can change him

Q2) When I am no more who will take care of him?
Doc: His to-be male spouse

Q3) If he gets married and brings home a guy what will people think?
Doc: Don't worry he will live separately

After that there were no questions or queries. A long discussion on what will people would think followed. The Dr told her the popular parable of the donkey, old man and boy. Doctor and MOM discussed spirituality, karma and Bhagwat Gita.

So now you too can meet him and clear your queries. He is a reputed physiatrist & sex consultant  and runs his own nursing home in South Bombay. He is also Hon. Psychiatrist – H. N. Hospital, D S. Kothari Hospital. Hon. Asst. Psychiatrist K. B. Bhabha Hospital, Bandra.

Be there even if you are very comfortable with yourself. It's always music to ears to hear  "Homosexuality is normal" - from a physiatrist.

Time : The Meet begins at 5:00 p.m. and continues for an hour at the restaurant. We may then move on to another venue close by for the dialogue.

Venue : We meet as usual at Just Around The Corner (JATC). JATC is a lovely snack bar at Bandra (West).

At Bandra Station, on the WEST side, take a rickshaw to Turner Road; at Turner Road take a right at Tawaa Restaurant (you will see an ICICI Bank on your left after the turn). Keep going straight for about two minutes; you will see the big blue signboard of 'JUST AROUND THE CORNER' on the left.

If you are however coming from Linking Road, take the very next left turn from the first petrol pump, leading to the Flying Machine Store. On driving down the crossing of two lanes you shall see a huge blue coloured board with "JUST AROUND THE CORNER" written onto it.

You can also take a bus going down Turner Road (Khar Station bus or Chuimm Village bus). Get off near Tawaa Restaurant and walk to JATC in 5 minutes.
