Andrew: I could build gcc 4.0.2 on my private iBook (OS X 10.4.4 = Darwin
V8.4.0), but not gcc 4.1.0 -- so the problem is most probably not G5-specific.

This is interesting as this worked for me on powerpc-darwin7.9.0 just fine. Do
you have a GNU binutils nm in your path?
