For what it's worth, the sample input is fine with
gcc-3.2.2
gcc-3.3.3
gcc-3.4.0
gcc-4.0.0
gcc-4.1.0
gcc-4.2.1
gcc-4.3.2
and broken with
gcc-4.4.2 (the original report)
gcc-4.5.1

This is a C bug, not a preprocessor bug, so I'm reassigning.
I suppose that it is really a documentation bug, but I didn't see a
category for that.
