since this is marked critical i want to make sure it doesn't fall between the
cracks. this patch still applies cleanly to the 4.0 branch.

Sadly, I didn't see the last comment in this PR until after 4.0.1 RC3.
If there is a need for RC4, I will include this patch; otherwise, it will get
moved back to 4.0.2.

Is it possible to backport this patch to 4.0.1?
The attached patch applies cleanly to the current 4.0.1 branch.
