It count just a little bit. I my self am also new to GCI but after reading
the contest website and guide i learn that its good to answer other
students questions either here or in the community channels,discussion
groups etc depending on the organization cus by doing that you are really
connecting
The organizations will decide on their finalists and winners by looking at
the students that have helped other students in their community. Most of
the mentors are also members of this list so if they see you are actively
contributing here to answer other students questions they will likely
notice

I have read on the Code In website that communication and community
contribution count towards winning prizes.
Does answering people's questions in this forum count towards that too?
If not, how can I earn those points?
