I assume the main issue is that Sentinel-1 is radar data in different
polarisations - which is not easy to visualise as an ”image" for human eyes

Paul, AIXM is far too complex to be read completely by ogr, at least two years
ago.
You need some of the specific AIXM readers that is in the market.

Correct, you must always densify a line to mimic the behaviour of great-circle,
loxodrome etc. in all spatial operations - depending on the definition of the
data CRS.
This is a necessity in all ”long navigation” use cases like aero and nautical.

I had missed something essential and simple ...
mode=2 must be added to the end of the PG connection string to tell GDAL to
treat a PostGIS raster table as one unit.
The default mode=1 treats each tile as a subdataset

Is there any GDAL tool to get the position of a given (eg. highest)
pixel value in a given area?
I.e. the reverse of gdallocationinfo
xyz-file analysing is hardly an option as the input is a 80 Gb Imagine file

How complex is your input file(s)?
ArcInfo coverage/E00 can have virtually any number of featureclasses.
However, a coverage have non-redundant geometry with only two primary
geometry sources: point and line. All other featureclasses (polygons,
nodes, multipolys, multilines etc) shares the geom
