I never did resolve this issue, but using the python libraries instead worked
out fine.

I tried to be as explicit as possible setting the source srs, including the
semi-major/minor axes:
gdalwarp -s_srs "+proj=geos +a=6378137 +b=6356752.31414 +lon_0=-75 +h=35786023
+x_0=0 +y_0=0 +ellps=GRS80 +units=m +no_defs +sweep=x" -t_srs EPSG:4326
-dstnodata -999.0 -tr 0.009 0.009
