Worked for me using the following:
#Change black to white
gdalbuildvrt -srcnodata 0 -vrtnodata 255 to-be-decollared.vrt
to-be-decollared.tif
#Run nearblack -white
nearblack -white -o decollared.tif to-be-decollared.vrt
