Open cascade is just free as in beer. The license is really not what
you would think.

Has anyone tried Open Cascade? It's free and somewhat open, but it
seems all the developers are in a for profit company -- maybe it h

The machine shop in using wants an IGES file.
For those of you who've used bender. I have a 21" x 16" grid of thicknesses
of my backrest for every inch both horizontally and vertically. What would
you suggest is the best procedure to come up with a 3-D model of the
backrest?

Yes, I did and it produced nice results. However, it took me quite a
while to get used to the rather exotic interface of blender. I uploaded a

I use varicad too. It is comparable (3D modelling, 2D drawings) but not
as feature rich as soli

Is it machining foam? I'm guessing then that you want a good software
path to a CNC toolpath generator such
The backrest to my wheelchair was custom molded to me including lateral
supports for scoliosis. I have blocks of foam that I want machined out to
the same shape. We laid a 1" x 1" grid over the backrest and used a height
gauge to measure thicknesses. I'd like to enter these thicknesses into a

If it's just an STL file I suggest wings3d. While not as powerful as
blender it's much easier to learn.

If you want a free tool for quickly drawing dimensioned 3d objects, get
Sketchup. Nothing else really compares for rapidly drawing 3d objects,

The closest public license tool is Blender 3D used with caliper plugin,
and grids. And it isn't even a straight comparison -- video game
animators use it
to create characters/creatures and landscapes.

I'm in need of a 3-D model of an object and want to try to draw it in a
Linux application. Does anyone know of a Linux version of SolidWorks or
something comparable?
