Turns out that my memory failed me, and I installed gerbview from the
kicad project. When I installed gerbv I got the square pads of 0805 as
expected.

Gerbers don't have holes in the copper where drilled holes go; the
"holes" are stored separetely in the drill file. Load both the copper
and drill files, stack them in the right order, and it should appear
the same as pcb.

Created a component and modified the pad property to square instead of
rounded, and in the gerber file they show up square, but no indication
of a hole. In pcb there is a hole in the pad. I used the description
for newlib footprint creation from the pcb manual to create the
symbol, and it look
