With Debian unstable libXrender.la is supplied by the package
libXrender-dev. It was in a separate package in sarge already.

I found that new versions of xorg in for instance debian unstable have
no file /usr/lib/libXrender.la, and that is going to be the norm, where
configure scripts stop looking for it, and libtool works without having it.
As a stopgap measure, I found a recent version of libXrender.la and put it
