You are right (ofcourse)! The permissions on documents don't need to match permissions on collections.. (I seem to have misinterpreted section 5.5 of 4.0's dev_guide (the last bullet in particular), and didn't test it myself thoroughly enough, though I have experimented a lot with security over the last projects.
