For me the key was booting with the noapic option, then after the liveCD
booted modprobe'ing sata_nv (SATA drive support) and forcedeth (for
onboard NIC).

Your english is fine. As long as you can understand us and we can
understand you, that's all that matters in any language.
If you compiled the 8139too driver as a module, please also send us the
output of
lsmod -v
If this is the case, did you
modprobe 8139too
If so you also have to ad

libdvdcss
If your system is similar enough, could I use your .config and
troubleshoot with that? with make menuconfig or make oldconfig or
something? (Is such a thing too personal to ask? I suppose so.)

Mike & Dimitri,
Thanks for your help!
I am not emulating scsi, since I was under the impression that I wasn't
supposed to with a 2.6 kernel. I did try that however, and it didn't work
either, but I'm not entirely sure I did it properly. Should I try it
again?
These DVDs (the two I'm assuming a

maybe that's just gdm restarting. anyway i don't see it again.

_smart_. darryl, you rock. any progress is progress, imho.
indeed, i can mount the dvd just fine if i boot from a cd with "docache,"
remove the livecd, and mount the dvd (as root) with
mkdir /mnt/dvd
mount /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/dvd
...said dvd will not mount when booted from installed system
sata drive)...or that it's on ide1 and not ide0?
Criminy. This is so annoying.
Thanks for trying to help.

Reinstalling from scratch did nothing.
Code:

Nope. They're DVDs. The DVD I was watching the other day was The Last
Samurai, and I've been testing with that one and with Hellboy. So the
former at least must be iso9660, since I didn't have udf compiled in the
kernel or loaded as a module at that time. Now it's loaded as a module,
but still
Did you emerge the nvidia drivers, or did you use nvidia's installer?
There is a known issue with nvidia drivers and udev. If you used
nvidia's installer, try uninstalling and doing it the "gentoo" way:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml
This worked dashingly with my XFX GeForce 5500
Duncan,
Yes on the iso9660--and I can mount data CDs, too. Yes on the mount
points; and I even tried creating a new one called "new" and mounting to
that (same result):
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ ls -l /mnt

drwx-- 2 root root 4096 Oct 28 01:23 cdrom
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Feb 17 0
Renzo,
Thanks man. That is a problem, however, it hasn't fixed anything:
lilfoo udf # modprobe udf
lilfoo udf # lsmod

udf81544 0
snd_ioctl3218048 0
snd_pcm_oss56360 0

ok, i can't mount dvds. i could a few days ago but now, no dice. the
only thing I did was burn a dvd-r. i'm getting kind of frustrated. i
think this is a udev issue of some sort...
